The Parks and Recreation Department offers an established, fully licensed, creative, hands-on curriculum that is differentiated to meet children where they're at and allows for long periods of time to play and explore the environment. Children self-select activities that encompass all areas of physical and cognitive development including math and science exploration, literacy and communication, dramatic play, creative arts, small motor, sensory play, and construction. Time is spent each day with individual children, small groups, and the entire group. The program is designed to prepare each child for a smooth transition to kindergarten. The program is open to all children who will enter kindergarten the following fall and meets at the Huntington Woods Recreation Center and utilizes all of its resources, including a full-sized gym and playgrounds.
Half and full day sessions are offered. The program schedule times are as follows:
Monday - Friday, 8:15 am - 11:15 AM Half Day Program
Monday - Friday, 8:15 am - 3:00 PM Full Day Program
Flexible scheduling allows you to choose the number of days per week your child participates. (2 day minimum.) You may add days as needed. The program follows the Berkley School calendar. Like the Berkley School District, our school year is 36 weeks long, September – June. The Pre-Kindergarten program is closed when Burton Elementary School is not in session.
Children come to school as competent, naturally motivated learners. The mission of the Huntington Woods Pre-Kindergarten Program is to ensure that these characteristics are maintained and strengthened, and to set the stage for learning by preparing a rich and varied environment and encouraging children to engage in activities which carry their development forward in an active learning classroom.
