Commissioner Jenks moved to the Woods in 1971. He was first elected to the City Commission in 1999 and then re-elected every 4 years. Prior to that he served on the Library Advisory board for 6 years, including 3 years as Chair. He will stand for reelection in November 2015. As City Commissioner for Huntington Woods he helps set city policy. He currently serves as a member of the Planning Commission (1/1/15) and as Legislative liaison to Lansing. He was the Mayor Pro Tem in FY 2014. That position is rotated annually. Within Huntington Woods Jenks is a member of the Men's Club and is a supporter of school youth programs. Jenks has a certificate as a Citizen Planner, after having completed the 1 year program at Michigan State University and is also a Fellow of the bipartisan Michigan Political Leadership Program.
Jenks was recently elected Chair of the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG). As Chair of SEMCOG, Commissioner Jenks represents seven (7) counties in SE Michigan, over 150 communities, the Intermediate School Districts and some of the community colleges in our region. Approximately 4.7 million people, nearly half the population of the State of Michigan, reside in the area represented by SEMCOG. Mr. Jenks began his term as Chair on June 25, 2015 and will serve in this capacity for one year. In addition, he has been a member of the Transportation and Regional Review committees. In 2007 Jenks was awarded a competitive Taubman Fellowship by SEMCOG to attend Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and completed the Executive Education program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government. Jenks was recently elected Vice Chairperson of the Metropolitan Affairs Coalition.
At the state level Jenks has been active with the Michigan Municipal League since the day after he was elected to office in Huntington Woods. He is Past President of MML (2007 to 2008). He was awarded a Life Membership in the MML this past October. At MML he currently serves on their statewide Transportation and their Urban Governance committees.
At the national level Jenks serves on the National League of Cities' Transportation Committee and on the International Council. He has completed 3 levels of leadership training and education at NLC.
Professionally Jenks owns a travel agency. He is active with Kiwanis, where he's a past president, on boards in the Filipino community, active in the Jewish community, active with Voices for Earth Justice in Detroit, supports programs and students in the Philippines, and is active in interfaith work. He is retired from 35 years of university and state government leadership, primarily in the fields of fundraising and civil rights. He was an original member of the Peace Corps from 1962 to 1964, serving in the Philippines. He is married. He is committed to adding public value.
